District Cabinet Meeting
Saturday is the second district cabinet
meeting of the Lions year. Let’s discuss some facts about a cabinet meeting.
Who Is the District Cabinet
– Each club president and club secretary are automatically part of the District’s
cabinet. Each zone chair is also a cabinet member. District committee and
multiple district committee members are part of the cabinet. All that said, any
Lion is more than welcome to attend.
What Is the Purpose – The cabinet advises the District Governor on matters of importance. Each zone chair explains important matters within the four or five clubs in that zone. The cabinet gets a report on Lions Sight Foundation (LSF), including fund raising and expenses. LSF committees explain projects within their committee’s control.
Why Have a Cabinet Meeting
– It’s important to share information obtained during the cabinet meeting.
Local clubs need to know the size of the Lions footprint worldwide, in
Mississippi and within the district. Knowing the work of Lions on so many wide
and varied projects is a source of motivation. That’s the purpose of the
cabinet meeting.
Another reason is to gain insight
from many Lions about upcoming events. As an example, there will be a series of
questions about the Mid-Winter convention. Poll results help event planners.
What Type of Business Is Under
Discussion – Like most meetings, there is always a financial report to
discuss. In this particular meeting, there is a request to purchase some
equipment for the district. The cabinet will also consider a request from two
clubs to authorize a Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) community
matching grant. The project is to build a handicapped accessible playground in
a Booneville city park.
How Long Does the Meeting Last
– That may be the most difficult question to answer. The goal is to wrap up all
district business within 90 minutes. Sometimes meetings run a bit longer. No
one gets shorted on time. We only ask that speakers be respectful of everyone
else’s time. Seldom does a cabinet meeting exceed two hours.
How Often Does the Cabinet
Meet – Each district has four cabinet meetings a year. The first was in
July. Saturday is the second. The third happens at the Mid-Winter Convention in
January. The final is during the afternoon of the State Convention. That will
be in early May.
Where Is the Cabinet Meeting
– Normally the District Governor selects a club to host the cabinet meeting.
With the coronavirus, this meeting will be a Zoom meeting. Zoom meetings are
perfectly legal, as determined by the Lions Club International legal division.
Even the International Board of Directors now utilize Zoom to conduct business.
