Lions Learning Center Is A Key To Membership Retention
During a Lions virtual symposium during the weekend, the
leaders revealed a startling face. Many new Lions leave the association within
the first three years for a variety of reasons. There is a way to reduce some
of the membership drops.
The study found that new Lions (within the first three years) who remained in the association took advantage of the Lions Learning Center (LLC). Access to the Lions Learning Center begins on the Lions Club International web page.
Along the top border is a link for Member Login. The only requirement is that a Lion must know his or her membership number. The club secretary has that information. It’s also printed on the subscription label for Lion Magazine. On the extreme right side of the page is a button for Learn.
That’s how you get to the LLC. So, what’s inside?
There are plenty of courses available on demand 24x7. Each
course has three or four modules. Most Lions need 15-20 minutes to complete a
module. It takes about an hour to complete a course. Here are two key points.
You can stop the course, even in the middle of a module. The
next time you log in and access that course, that’s where you pick up the
instruction. The second point is even better.
All LLC courses are free. That’s right. Access to the LLC comes
with your Lions Club International membership.
There are two basic types of LLC courses. One concerns
actual local club offices. These include club president, club secretary and
club treasurer. While there is no course for a club vice president, the vice
president should take the President’s course. Most club vice presidents will
become the club president within the next year or two.
There is a second type of LLC course. Lions calls these
courses soft skills. I prefer the term life skills. Here are just a few
examples of these soft skills or life skills. Effective communication. Public
speaking. Goal setting. Establishing committees. Conflict resolution.
Listening. Do those sound interesting?
Perhaps these courses will reinforce things you already
know. Perhaps they will present answers to certain things that other courses
provided only confusion.
We began by discussing why members drop Lions drop their
membership in the first three years. The same study found that Lions who did
not take advantage of the LLC dropped at a significantly higher rate.
The LLC cannot and will not prevent younger Lions from
dropping out. It does reduce the drop rate. Mention this in your club. Make
continuing Lions education a regular part of every Lions meeting.
