Tell The Lions Story

Many Lions Clubs already perform a significant amount of meaningful service in their community. Why is there a problem keeping members? Why is there a problem finding new Lions? Those are perhaps the most important questions ever asked. The success of the North American Membership Initiative (NAMI) depends of Lions doing more than service. They need to take service a step further. 

Many Lions Clubs provide sight screenings. Many clubs have other vision projects. Some clubs create awareness about the effects of diabetes. Other clubs emphasize preserving the environment. Many clubs actively support another Lions Club International (LCI) service project – Hunger. Serving those with pediatric cancer and their families is the fifth LCI service project. 

The community always comes first to Lions. A club service project does not have to fit into one of the five LCI service projects. Some clubs sponsor youth athletic teams. Others recognize and thank first responders, the military or those in the health care profession. The list is infinite. No matter how a club serves their community, they must do one more thing. 

It’s imperative that clubs and individual Lions tell their story. In the old days, Lions relied on the local newspaper. In today’s society, many Lions Clubs leverage social media to tell their story. This blog is one avenue to tell the Lions story. So is Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and many other social media sites. 

Here is a challenge for each Lion in District 30-M who has a social media account. Make it a priority to mention Lions at least once each week. It does not have to be just before a meeting. It does not have to be before a club service project. It does not have to follow a club event. Continually remind your social media following you are a Lion. Remind them of the work we do. Remind them of the impact we have. Two things will probably happen. Both are good. 

A non-Lion may ask about joining Lions. That’s a great opportunity to tell your personal story about why you are a Lion. It is possible that your follower does not live in your community. You could be recruiting for a Lions Club somewhere else. There is still another reason. 

Perhaps you have social media followers who are Lions. You can motivate them to follow your lead. There is power in a subtle nudge. If they follow your lead, it is possible to double your impact. If others follow, the impact can become exponential. 

Telling the Lions story on social media regularly is an important aspect of NAMI. Remind others what Lions do by providing specific examples of how “We Serve.”
