Lions Use Technology to Meet

Lions feel the impact of the coronavirus. It’s changed the way we live. It’s changed the way we serve. It’s changed the way interact with others. It’s even changed the way we meet.

Lions from the northern half of Mississippi planned to meet in Greenwood tomorrow. The coronavirus forces us to change the meeting format.

Lions from the northern half of Mississippi meet quarterly to discuss Lions business. The first two meetings generally last about two hours. These are the July and October meetings.

The January and May meetings are in a convention format. Conventions usually begin with supper on Friday night. They end with a banquet on Saturday night. Conventions have the two-hour business meeting. They also include small training seminars.

Tomorrow’s meeting has some very important objectives. The meeting minutes must reflect those objectives.

Corinth received a $100,000 LionsClub International Foundation (LCIF) grant. That grant helped build a walking track in a public park. In early January a tornado destroyed more than 200 Desoto County family homes. LCIF provided a $10,000 grant for food and cleaning supplies to the victims. Now it’s time to officially close both grants. Closing a grant means LCIF can support a community project in another city. Closing a grant, we can provide financial assistance for the next natural disaster.

Another important meeting objective is fun. We have to authorize the treasurer to write donation checks. The fun part is listening and learning as Lions advocate an amount to receive our dollars.

LCIF will likely receive a generous donation. So will the Lions of Mississippi Sight Foundation. The Mid-SouthLions Sight and Hearing Service in Memphis always provides a great “bang for the buck”. The fun doesn’t stop there.

Non-Lion organizations could find a check in the mail. One of these might be St. Jude’s. They treat pediatric cancer patients. That’s serving an international service project.

Informing Lions about the scope of our work in the final meeting objective. The goal is that this information reaches every Lion in every club in north Mississippi. Please review the previous blog to learn about the scope of our work.

We have two dozen different Lion speakers on the agenda. That means every word counts.

The coronavirus will not stop the meeting. It will only stop the in-person meeting. We can still meet virtually.

Lions are becoming comfortable with video meetings. Instead of visiting Greenwood, we will have a Zoom meeting.

Each club president and club secretary received an email with the Zoom meeting number and password. Lions do not have “members” only meetings. Our work is public. So are our meetings. Contact your club secretary or club president to get the Zoom meeting number and password.
