A Change Of Scenery
In watching some new election
coverage, a politician sometimes utters the phrase, “I’m not leaving the party,
the party left me.” That happens in Lions also. An individual member becomes disenchanted
with the local club. Let’s discuss a few alternatives.
The easiest way is for a disappointed
Lion to show that feeling is by resignation. That should be the final
alternative – not the first. Perhaps changing clubs could be the solution. Do
not fall for the false assumption that all Lions clubs are the same. In some
ways they are. In more ways each club is unique.
It’s true all Lions Club serve their community. Perhaps a specific club has one major annual service project. If a club member has limited time, then this specific club might be an excellent fit. If an individual Lion wants to serve on a monthly basis, that specific club might not be the best fit.
There are Lions clubs that have
multiple service projects throughout the year. For the Lion that loves to always
seek service opportunities because of unlimited time restraints, this club may
be the perfect fit. Conversely, a Lion with limited free time might find this
club not appealing.
Here is another example of a
Lions Club not being a good fit for a member. Suppose the club meets for lunch
and a program. That’s a great fit for a person who can leave work for a noon
restaurant meeting. It’s not a great fit for someone like a teacher who cannot
leave campus.
A club that meets in the evening
might appear on the surface to be a perfect fit. That is unless a Lion has a
job other than during traditional “day job” hours. It might be on the evening
shift or late-night shift. It might be a second job. It might be parental responsibilities.
The bottom line is that there is
no perfect time for a Lions meeting. Don’t give up on Lions because the club is
either too active or too inactive. Don’t give up on Lions because the meetings
are at the wrong time. People have to fit Lions into their schedule. Try to
find a nearby club that meets at a convenient time. Try to find a nearby club
that serves at a frequency and time that fits. Feel free to contact the zone
chair or district governor for suggestions on other Lions Clubs as an
alternative.
