Where Are We?

We are three months into the current Lions year. To achieve the North American Membership Initiative (NAMI) goal by June 30, 2021, each club should be one-fourth of the way to reaching that goal. One quarter is in the books. Three quarters remain. What are the membership results of your club at this point in time?

There is a district goal to increase individual club membership by a net of one this current Lions year. That simply means, if the club had 20 members on June 30, 2020, then that club should have a membership of 21 on June 30, 2021.

Simply adding a new Lion to the membership roll is not enough. What happens if a faithful Lion dies? What happens if a Lion transfers to another club? What happens if a Lion resigns for whatever reason?

Each membership drop, without regard to the reason, means the club must find someone to join the club. That’s just to maintain membership at the status quo. Keeping pace is not the goal. Increasing net membership is the goal.

Most club drop three or four Lions each year due to a multitude of reasons. The majority of the reasons appear above. Each drop must have a replacement for membership to grow.

Take a critical review of your club’s membership status. Is it increasing? If so, what are the things you are doing to attract new Lions? Then keep doing those things.

The main reason for a club to increase membership is to ask people to join. Think back to when you became a Lion. Someone probably asked you. Return the favor to another. Ask them to become a Lion. Seldom do people walk into your club meeting and ask to join. Do your part.

What happens if your club’s membership decreased during the first quarter? Ask why is that happening? Be critical of your meeting format. Meeting format can include the time and day of the meeting? Are meetings too long? Are meetings nothing but business? A good club should combine business, speakers, and a time for social interaction. Is your club serving? Are their Lions in your club causing a problem? Have you engaged all the Lions into the club’s projects? Sometimes the answers may be ugly. Face them. Make changes. The membership goal will not change.

One way to increase membership is by meaningful service. We will examine that next time.
